Frequently Asked Questions.

  • I have a burning passion for teaching with empathy. So often, students come to me stating they are dumb, bad at school, and have low confidence. I make it my mission to highlight small wins along the way to slowly help each child realize their potential. A student learns to believe in themselves as they experience success regularly.

In addition to being your child’s cheerleader, I am VERY focused on data. I teach with strategies supported and proven to be effective by experts in education. I use frequent progress monitoring to ensure each child is growing at an adequate rate and is trending towards the common goal we created together.

  • I loosely follow the Department of Instruction’s Essential Standards. I also focus heavily on the Five Components of reading, often referred to as the Science of reading.

    Phonics

    Phonemic Awareness

    Vocabulary

    Fluency

    Reading Comprehension

I use Orton Gillingham techniques and strategies in the majority of my sessions to help students understand concepts deeply.

  • I offer all of my courses virtually or in person! Even a group can have some students in person and other students virtual!

  • During our initial consultation, I ask a series of questions and consult data from your child’s school to determine reasonable goals. I guarantee that progress is made by progress monitoring children every 4-6 sessions. If data is showing we are not making progress towards our goal, I will problem solve with you and put new interventions into our plan to ensure success. Research tells us that 95% of children can learn! I look for the method that will reach each child.

Outside of sessions, I also provide students with a Google Classroom full of practice, instructional examples, and posters for additional support.

  • I have been working in education for nearly a decade. Over the years, I have worked in public, private, and charter schools in Davidson, Guilford, Durham, and Johnston county.

  • An unexpected death in my family caused me to resign from teaching in August of 2019. I started tutoring a few hours a week in October of 2019 and quickly discovered working with children was soothing to my soul. My small business, then called Beeson Tutoring, quickly picked up speed. I began having to add students to a waitlist because there were not enough hours in the day!

This led me to seek additional training in small group tutoring, so I could work with more children per hour and not have to turn students away. Grouping students together has been a beautiful experience. In addition to academic skills, I am able to work on skills for speaking and listening as well as social and emotional learning in sessions.

When COVID-19 spread throughout the United States, I was pregnant with my now toddler. This caused me to completely move my business online. In order to ensure quality and growth for my students, I took a distance learning course which gave me the confidence and excitement to instruct students online during the peak of the pandemic and beyond.

  • I request payment in full at the first session of every month. I use PayPal business to send monthly invoices. Invoices are e-mailed by the 28th of each month for the following month. For example, September’s invoice will be emailed to you by August 28th.

I understand that life happens, and sometimes a scheduled session will be missed. In these situations, I ask that you please remove your time slot from the calendar. You are welcome to sign up for a make-up session any time that is labeled “open”.

If your child misses a group session, you can have a make-up session with other students in the same situation. Please keep in mind that group make-up sessions are not always with the same students as a regularly scheduled session. Alternatively, you can sign your child up for a private session, and I can send you an invoice for the difference in payment between a private and group session.

*Whenever possible, please keep make-up sessions in the same month as the missed session.
